Secret Menus: Choice selections from 6 popular chains
Source:  WTOP

Many restaurant menus have a secret side — a hidden set of entrees, sides and whatnot.

You’ve probably never heard of the Burritodilla (Chipotle). Or the Suicide Burger (Burger King). Or the Land, Sea and Air Burger (McDonald’s).

Or heck, maybe you have. Secret menus are not that secret. Some stumble upon secret menu items online; others learn about them through word-of-mouth. Per the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, why the items stay hidden is a marketing matter. Their appeal is thought to be limited, so it doesn’t justify the cost of introducing and promoting them.

Yours Truly reached out to a few local businesses to gain more insight. But as we all know, you can’t spell “Doesn’t Call Back” without the letters “D.C.” The mystery endures.

Fortunately, you don’t need security clearance to learn what’s on secret menus.

Below is a lovingly aggregated collection of choice secret menu items. Some secret menus are longer than you’d expect, which is why links are provided if you want to explore more.

One last thing: Have the recipe ready to share when you order, because there’s a chance they won’t know what you’re talking about. In some cases, you might have to order multiple things and assemble it yourself. Such is life.

Five Guys Secret Menu

DOUBLE GRILLED CHEESE BURGER. A double cheeseburger, with two grilled-cheese sandwiches doing the work of the bun. You might need to spell it out for whichever one of the five guys is taking orders that day. Tweet a picture of it before you dig in, and tag the Center for Science in the Public Interest.

CHIP BUTTY. Assemble your own U.S. version of a brilliant U.K. after-bar classic. It’s basically a small order of fries inside of an untoasted bun. Add ketchup or malt vinegar, and Bob’s your uncle.

LITTLE BACON CHEESEBURGER BOWL. Inspired by the classic children’s book of the same name, this dish forgoes the carbs. Simply order a little bacon cheeseburger with pickles, grilled onions, green peppers, mayo and mustard. Lose the bun, then add hot sauce if you feel so inclined.

PATTY MELT. Order a grilled cheese with (at least) one patty. While it’s not the conventional patty melt with caramelized onions and Swiss cheese, you do maintain the flexibility to customize with various toppings.

“THE ARTERY ANNIHILATOR. It’s a bacon cheeseburger with a bacon hot dog cut in half and placed atop it. A great way to impress her on that first date.

STEAK FRITES. A decidedly blue collar take on the French staple. Order fries with a bunless burger that’s been topped with A1 steak sauce. A great way to impress her if she agrees to a second date.

SLOPPY JOE. If you’re among the 0.1% of Americans who craves a sloppy joe, here’s a way to get the flavor profile without the unconstructed mess. Order a burger and top with it with grilled green peppers and onions, along with barbecue sauce and ketchup.

Shake Shack Secret Menu

PEANUT BUTTER BACON BURGER. On the street, it’s known as a Bacon Shack Burger served with peanut sauce. You’ll need to supply your own strawberry preserves to truly top it off properly.

ICE CREAM SANDWICH. Some assembly required. Get a scoop of ice cream with a toasted bun on the side. Add scoop to the bun. It’s messy, so you’ll need to put it on speakerphone when you tell your personal trainer you can’t make it to the gym.

QUAD BURGER. Yep. Four patties on this big boy, which can be customized per your appetite. Don’t forget the fries.

GRILLED CHEESE. There’s widespread online acclaim for this entry. It’s amazing what a little butter and griddle time will do to the simplest of dishes. Adding bacon is said to be, understandably, a popular modification.

CHILI PEPPER CHEESE FRIES. These are fries with chili peppers and cheese on top.

CHEESE DOG: It’s a hot dog split down the middle, with cheese sauce poured on top for you health nuts out there.

McDonald’s Secret Menu

LAND, SEA AND AIR BURGER. It’s a fast-food Voltron, comprising processed animal protein from the land (two McDouble patties), sea (Filet-o-Fish square) and air (McChicken)! If they give you a blank look when you order it, order the components and build your own with appropriate sound effects.

CHICKEN McGRIDDLE. Deep fried chicken sandwiched inside the McGriddle’s weird pancake-tasting bun thing. Add cheese, bacon and/or egg to it if you don’t plan to be eating for another day or so.

BIG MAC ‘N’ CHEESE. A pretty sad vegetarian option. Long story short, it’s a Big Mac minus the meat. Downside here is no plant-based protein substitute. Worse, you’re still paying full price for a Big Mac, but at least it’s fun to yell it out when you order at the drive-thru.

MONSTER MAC. Ronald McDonald was working in the lab, late one night, when he came up with … a Big Mac with eight patties? It’s aliiiiiiive!

DENALI MAC. This Big Mac variant is built around two quarter-pounder patties. Do the math: That’s a half-pound of meat. And it is perfectly normal to eat a half-pound of meat in one sitting. Named after the tallest peak in North America, it’s actually on the official menu in Alaska.

THE Mc1035. A tribute to that magical time of the morning when McDonald’s transitions from breakfast to lunch/dinner. (Some breakfast items are available all day now.) It’s a combination of the Egg McMuffin and a McDouble. Transfer the beef from the burger to the McMuffin, and that’s it. What do you do with the rest of the McDouble? Ummm … trade it back for store credit? Sell it to a pawnshop? Call a hazmat team?

THE APPLE PIE McFLURRY. Ask them to add a baked apple pie to your McFlurry ice cream thing. If they don’t, DIY, then write a stern letter to Mayor McCheese.

Starbucks Secret Menu

RED EYE. Drip coffee with an added shot of espresso. You can order it with yet another shot of espresso and get a BLACK EYE. Is that too much caffeine? Well, as a former newspaper guy, Yours Truly can proclaim it was barely enough.

GREEN EYE. You mean there’s a variant with a THIRD shot of espresso?! Why didn’t we know about this sooner?

LIQUID COCAINE. Four shots of espresso, served with four pumps of white chocolate syrup over ice. OK, that’s just overkill.

PUMPKIN CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE FRAPPUCCINO. Only available during pumpkin spice season. (Which begins when? Like Labor Day now?) Pumpkin Spice Crème Frappuccino, with cinnamon syrup, mocha sauce and java chips.

THREE C’S LATTE. A Cinnamon Dolce Latte with mocha and caramel syrup added. Anything with caramel is never bad, so no critique is necessary here.

CARAMEL SNICKERDOODLE MACCHIATO. Oh, hi there. Iced Soy Macchiato served upside down (i.e., espresso is poured last), with vanilla and cinnamon syrup.

COUNT CHOCULA FRAPPUCCINO. Disclosure: Yours Truly is a proud, unpaid brand advocate for Count Chocula. He’s a dude who gets nourishment not from blood, but from his marshmallow-laden namesake. And he’s no weirdo like that Cocoa Puffs bird. The drink: whole milk with vanilla bean powder, marshmallow and mocha syrups, whipped cream and mocha drizzle.

Chipotle Secret Menu

BURRITODILLA. You’re probably thinking to yourself, “Hey, this sounds like a potential hybrid of burrito and quesadilla. Right you are. Best description of it is a quesadilla with half the contents of a burrito, but more cheese. Then it’s folded closed.

QUESARITO. Take a burrito, then wrap a quesadilla around it. Then keep the Maalox handy. Perfect for when you’re trying to impress a would-be client.

DOUBLE-WRAPPED BURRITO. It’s a burrito with an extra tortilla wrapped around it — ya know, for when it’s cold outside. And unlike a lot of secret menu items, this option reportedly doesn’t cost any extra.

Taco Bell Secret Menu

THE INCREDIBLE HULK BURRITO. Substitute guacamole for cheese sauce in this variant of the Five-Layer Burrito. Another version, THE HULK, adds guac to a Bean-and-Cheese Burrito. Safe to say guac is the consistent here. If it smashes your appetite, you did it right.

THE CHEESARITO. Rolled-up tortilla containing melted cheese, scallions and taco sauce. Really not sure what to think. A polite “no for now.

CHILI CHEESE BURRITO. Not much more to it than a tortilla, cheese and chili. Despite the simplicity, it sounds like it’s worth the mess. That combination works with just about anything else on the Bell’s official menu, too.

DOUBLE-GRILLED QUESADILLA. It is what it is. The result is a crispier exterior to go along with the interior goo.

THE SUPERMAN BURRITO. Look! Up in the sky! It’s a Cheesy Double Beef Burrito loaded with extra potatoes, sour cream, guac and tortilla strips — and an infringement of Warner Bros.’ intellectual property!

Brown’s future in jeopardy after 76ers suffer early exit
Source:  WTOP
Monday, 24 August 2020 03:06

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A year ago against Toronto, four bounces of the basketball finished the 76ers. This season, four straight playoff losses ended Philly’s season and sent the Sixers to the brink of a serious shakeup.

Brett Brown has but a slim chance of a return after seven seasons on the bench where he endured a 10-win season and losing streaks of 28 and 26 games. But, of most recent importance, Brown failed to mold the team out of the growing pains of the “Process into championship contenders, with a mismatched roster that included All-Stars Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons.

The Sixers were swept out of the postseason by Boston with Simmons sidelined with a knee injury and Embiid tasked with carrying the franchise toward an unlikely title.

Much like every season since 1983, it was never going to happen.

Brown will likely pay the price. He seemed resigned to his fate after Game 4 and said Philly never got him at his best, mostly from the ugly mix of years of rebuilding, injury-prone players and a roster that was out of sorts. Al Horford is near the top of recent Philadelphia sports free-agent busts after he lost his starting job in the first year of four-year contract with $97 million guaranteed. Tobias Harris and Josh Richardson rarely played to their big-money potential.

“He’s a good guy, Richardson said. “He’s a good man. He means well. I just think going forward, we’ve just got to have some more accountability. I don’t think there was much accountability this season and I think that was part of our problem.

After the early years of Brown’s tenure was spent cleaning out salary cap space and gobbling draft picks, the 76ers are stuck with a bloated roster and not much room for general manager Elton Brand to maneuver into a big move.

The sting of last season’s elimination, when Kawhi Leonard sank the first Game 7-ending buzzer-beater in NBA history to lead Toronto past the 76ers, seems almost enviable compared to the way the Sixers limped toward Sunday’s exit.

Brown is about out of chances to fix the Sixers.

“Great guy. He’s an even better person than a coach, Embiid said. “He cares about his players. No matter what happens, I don’t make the decisions. I trust management. He’s gonna be a great friend no matter what.

The 76ers have $28.8 million to Simmons and $29.5 million to Embiid (30 points, 12 boards vs. Boston) committed for next season. Ok, while both have serious flaws, they are All-Stars and the franchise cornerstones — though Brand would be wise to dangle their names as trade bait. But it’s the $27.5 million to Horford and a whopping $34.4 million to Harris that have the Sixers in a hole. Horford and Embiid never meshed to the point where Horford was benched at times in the regular season and playoffs and became a scapegoat for Philly’s woes.

Horford went 12-for-25 from the floor vs. the Celtics and missed all four 3-pointers.

“The job of an NBA coach is to take the team that you have and try to maximize it and get the most out of it. I did not do that, Brown said. “I came in and we talked about smash mouth, bully ball, that we’re built for the playoffs and we’re big. Really all of those kinds of phrases equal ‘man we have a huge team, we have a big team.’ The thing I found most challenging as the season played out was that space became an enormous issue. Effectively you had a mismatch every time you went down the court.

Simmons continued to frustrate, playing at times as one of the best defenders and rim attackers in the game. Other times, he refused to shoot and his missing perimeter game in a 3-point happy NBA has hurt the Sixers. Simmons made his first two NBA 3-pointers, and Brown at one point suggested Simmons attempt one every game. He attempted only seven before his season ended with surgery on his left knee.

Richardson said the next coach needs to work on holding the best players accountable. Simmons and Embiid were often deemed untouchable with Brown or a management loathe to criticize and offend their star plays.

“There’s always gotta be a Day 1, said Richardson, acquired in the Jimmy Butler deal. “We’ve just gotta start from scratch. It’s not gonna be easy and we’re not gonna be comfortable, but that’s what championship teams do. Guys not doing their job on or off the court, there’s gotta be some kind of consequence, not consequence, but we’ve gotta be able to talk to each other and listen.

Richardson sent the message. Is Brand listening?

At least 10 killed in bomb attacks in southern Philippines
Source:  WTOP
Monday, 24 August 2020 03:05

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Suspected Islamic militants set off powerful bombs in a southern Philippine town Monday, killing at least 10 soldiers and civilians despite extra tight security because of threats of attacks by the Islamic State group-aligned militants, military officials said.

Regional military commander Lt. Gen. Corleto Vinluan said at least five soldiers and four civilians were killed in the first attack when a bomb attached to a motorcycle exploded at noon near two parked army trucks in front of a grocery and a computer shop in Jolo town in Sulu province.

“It was a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device which exploded while our soldiers were on a marketing run, Vinluan told reporters.

A second blast nearby, apparently from a female suicide attacker, occurred about an hour later and killed the bomber and a soldier, Vinluan and other officials said. “A soldier was checking on somebody then there was another explosion, Vinluan said.

A third unexploded bomb was reportedly found in a public market. Jolo was immediately placed in a security lockdown by troops and police.

Nearly 40 soldiers, police and civilians were wounded in the bomb attacks, military and police officials said.

Pictures seen by The Associated Press showed soldiers carrying a man from the scene of the explosion near an army truck while another blast victim lay on the road. The wreckage of a motorcycle and partial remains were seen on the road.

The first bombing was carried out near a town plaza and a Roman Catholic cathedral in the predominantly Muslim province. The country’s southern region is home to minority Muslims in the largely Roman Catholic nation and has been the scene of decades of Muslim separatist unrest, particularly in far-flung island provinces like Jolo.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, but the military blamed an Abu Sayyaf militant commander, Mundi Sawadjaan, for the bombings.

Military officials said last week that Sawadjaan plans to launch bombings in Sulu using two female suicide attackers. Army troops were carrying out a covert operation to locate and capture Sawadjaan and the suicide bombers in June when four army personnel were stopped at a Jolo police checkpoint and later shot to death by police personnel.

The army angrily described the killings as a rubout and demanded murder charges to be filed against nine policemen. Police officials, however, say it may have been a mistaken encounter between the army and police forces.

The military has been waging a months-long offensive against the Abu Sayyaf, a small but violent group aligned with the Islamic State group and blacklisted by the United States and the Philippines as a terrorist group for past bombings, ransom kidnappings and beheadings.

The number of its armed fighters have dwindled to a few hundreds in recent years due to battle setbacks and surrenders, including a key commander, Abduljihad Susukan, who gave up to authorities two weeks ago after being wounded in battle.

Susukan has been blamed for kidnappings and beheadings of hostages, including foreign tourists, and surrenders through a Muslim rebel chief, who has signed a peace deal and was cooperating with the government. He is now in police custody and faces multiple murder charges.

Military officials said they were not discounting the possibility that Monday’s bombings may have been staged partly as a retaliation for the detention of Susukan, who is now in police custody and faces multiple murder and kidnapping charges.

Denmark suspends foreign spy agency chief, 2 others

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Denmark’s government says that the head of the country’s foreign intelligence service has been “relieved of duty for the time beingâ€ along with two other senior employees.

Lars Findsen took the helm of the Danish Defense Intelligence Service, or DDIS, in 2015, and from 2002 to 2007, he headed the domestic intelligence service. The two other employees of DDIS, which is also responsible for military intelligence, weren’t identified.

In a brief statement Monday, Defense Minister Trine Bramsen gave no reason as to why the three employees were suspended.

The Danish military has been at the center of scandals in recent months involving high-ranking officers who have been favoring relatives.

Raptors hope Lowry will be ready when they face Celtics
Source:  WTOP
Monday, 24 August 2020 03:05

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — When the Toronto Raptors tip off the Eastern Conference semifinals against Boston, they want Kyle Lowry on the floor.

The point guard is their veteran leader, the guy who means so much more to them than stats would ever show. Beating undermanned Brooklyn without him was easy. Getting by the Celtics if he’s sidelined would not be.

But it would be foolish to count the Raptors out. Losing Kawhi Leonard last summer didn’t wreck them and playing without Lowry wouldn’t either.

“You’ve got to go out there with who’s healthy and available and you’ve got to think that there’s a good chance you can figure out a way to win,â€ coach Nick Nurse said. “And that’s what we’ll do either way.â€

It’s what the Raptors have done all season. Not only did they lose the NBA Finals MVP when Leonard left, but they then had each of their top five scorers miss at least 10 games because of injury.

So their reserves are used to being counted on, and when Lowry injured his foot in the first quarter Sunday and Fred VanVleet picked up three fouls in the first half, they picked up the slack in a record way. Toronto’s bench scored 100 points, most in any game since official starters began being tracked in 1970-71, and finished a sweep of the Nets with a 150-122 victory.

The Celtics also swept their first-round series so the start of the East semis was moved up to Thursday. That gives Lowry a few days to be ready and Nurse said it if he’s not, it won’t be because of a minor injury.

“I mean, he played with I don’t know how many, 14 or 16 straight playoff games last year with a totally messed up left thumb when we were running through the finals last year, so it’s going to take something pretty serious to keep him out, Nurse said.

The Raptors are 11-1 since the NBA restart, with the lone loss to the Celtics. Boston also won in Toronto on Christmas, with the Raptors avenging that loss on the road three days later.

Now the Nos. 2 and 3 seeds meet again in the playoffs, with the Raptors hoping Lowry will be ready for a matchup with Kemba Walker.

“I think it’s going to be a fun series and I’m kind of bummed that we’re not going to have the fans, that intensity down at TD Garden and that our fans bring at Scotiabank, Raptors reserve Norman Powell said.

“I think that’s an added element that is going to be missed, but we’ve got two teams that are very deep, very talented and it’s going to take everybody on our end to pull this one out and go in there and do what we have to do.

Burkina Faso army blamed for extrajudicial torture, deaths
Source:  WTOP
Monday, 24 August 2020 03:02

FADA N’GOURMA, Burkina Faso (AP) —

Huddled on the floor in a dimly lit room, one by one the five men displayed wounds they say were inflicted by government soldiers armed with wooden planks, knives and electric cables.

A 30-year-old recounted how a soldier held a cigarette lighter to his face while holding his head to the ground with a boot.

“The soldiers said if you don’t tell us where the jihadists are we’ll kill you,â€ said the man, who like the others spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals. “I was screaming and crying and begging him not to burn me.”

Of the dozen men taken from Burkina Faso’s eastern town of Tawalbougou in late June on suspicion of supporting Islamic extremist rebels, only five survived, they said. One man died from the beatings and six others were shot and killed, said the survivors. Their families were too afraid to collect their bodies, they said.

Some of the survivors can barely speak after the trauma, but all maintain they had no affiliation with the Islamic extremists who have rapidly destabilized Burkina Faso over the past few years.

Such accusations of extrajudicial killings, torture and unlawful detention by Burkina Faso’s military are mounting, as the ill-equipped and under-trained army scrambles to stem the spread of jihadist violence that’s ravaging the country. As attacks linked to Islamic militants increase, so does the army’s targeting of civilians perceived to support them, charge rights groups.

Government officials deny that its forces are carrying out the abuse and say it places great emphasis on human rights and is conducting investigations into other alleged abuses by security personnel.

The allegations of rights abuses highlight the instability caused by the spread of extremist violence in Burkina Faso and the surrounding countries of West Africa’s Sahel region. Similar extremist violence in neighboring Mali and that government’s lack of success in controlling it is blamed for contributing to the coup there last week.

Many of the alleged victims of army abuse in Burkina Faso, like the five interviewed by AP, come from the Peuhl ethnic group, also known as the Fulani.

Rights groups say the army is tarnishing its reputation and eroding trust among a desperate population that is facing attacks on multiple fronts.

“Allegations of abuse by the security forces and pro-government militias are trending dangerously up. Every time a suspect last seen in their custody winds up dead along a path or in a cell, confidence in the state decreases and the chance that angry men will support the jihadists increases, said Corinne Dufka, West Africa director for Human Rights Watch.

During the first seven months of this year, 288 civilians were killed by government forces, more than a quarter of the total civilian deaths caused by violence, according to the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project, which collects and analyzes conflict information.

The trend is specifically jarring in Burkina Faso’s east, where the number of civilians killed by government forces has swelled by almost nine times so far this year compared to the second half of last year, according to the ACLED data.

The men who spoke with the AP in Fada N’gourma town said they were abducted from their homes by government soldiers backed by volunteer fighters from the local area. The military forces put the men into trucks and drove them around for hours while torturing them, the men told AP.

The incident comes on the heels of a Human Rights Watch report last month that said evidence suggested the army was responsible for the large scale executions of 180 people in the country’s north found in mass graves. The majority of the victims in the graves were also ethnic Peuhl herders.

The government did not respond to requests by the AP seeking comment about the alleged attacks in June. The ministry of defense has previously suggested such killings could have been carried out by groups using stolen army uniforms and equipment.

Foreign embassy cables from June seen by the AP say that President Roch Marc Christian Kabore appeared defensive when questioned about the abuses. The president said security forces were having a hard time finding “real terrorists who infiltrate communities.

In June, jihadists disguised in burqas killed seven people in a village not far from Fada N’Gourma, said a high-ranking army officer who did not want to be named. Sometimes the jihadists pretend to be cattle or food traders so they can spy, he said on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter.

Civilians trying to survive in the east say they’re caught between government and volunteer brutality, as well as jihadist attacks.

Ousmane Bande lost his son in the June attacks with government soldiers, his 17-year-old nephew was killed days later at a checkpoint manned by volunteers, not far from Fada N’gourma. Wrapping his prayer beads around his fingers, he said it’s hard to see his nine grandchildren now have to grow up without a father.

“I’m suffering,â€ he said. “The government needs to find a way to bring back peace.”

Protest erupts after Wisconsin police shoot man from behind
Source:  WTOP
Monday, 24 August 2020 02:47

KENOSHA, Wis. (AP) — Officers deployed tear gas early Monday in an effort to disperse hundreds of people who took to the streets following a police shooting in Kenosha that also drew a harsh rebuke from the governor after a video posted on social media appeared to show officers shoot at a Black man’s back seven times as he leaned into a vehicle.

A person was hospitalized in serious condition following a shooting by officers about 5 p.m. Sunday as officers were responding to a “domestic incident, the Kenosha Police Department said in a news release. Police did not provide details about what led to the shooting, but said the person was transported to a hospital in Milwaukee for treatment.

By late Sunday, fires had broken out along some streets, appearing to damage large trucks, as crowds faced off with law enforcement. Officers in riot gear stood in lines and SWAT vehicles remained on the streets near city buildings despite the declaration of a curfew until 7 a.m. Tear gas was used to disperse groups of people, according to reporters at the scene.

In the video posted on social media that appeared to show the shooting from across a street, three officers could be seen shouting and pointing their weapons at the man as he walked around the front of a parked SUV. As the man opened the driver’s side door and leaned inside, one officer grabbed his shirt from behind and then fired into the vehicle. Seven shots could be heard on the video, though it was unclear if more than one officer fired.

Gov. Tony Evers on Sunday night released a statement condemning the shooting of the man whom he identified as Jacob Blake, saying that “while we do not have all of the details yet, what we know for certain is that he is not the first Black man or person to have been shot or injured or mercilessly killed at the hands of individuals in law enforcement in our state or our country.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice, which is investigating the shooting, did not release any details about the involved officers except to say they have been placed on administrative leave.

Following the shooting, social media posts showed neighbors gathering in the surrounding streets and hurling comments at police. Some could be heard chanting “no justice, no peace while others appeared to throw objects at officers and damage police vehicles.

Later Sunday, in a scene that mirrored the months of protests over racial injustice around the world that have followed the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and other Black people killed by police, marchers headed to the Kenosha County Public Safety Building, which authorities mostly blocked off. Protesters marched along lines of cars honking on their way to the station. Some police officers were positioned on the roof of the station as people continued toward the building.

Outside the station, protesters clashed with officers dressed in riot gear that included plastic facemasks and held plastic shields and batons that they occasionally used to push people back.

Evers meanwhile indicated an intention to further respond to the shooting.

“I have said all along that although we must offer our empathy, equally important is our action,” he said. “In the coming days, we will demand just that of elected officials in our state who have failed to recognize the racism in our state and our country for far too long.â€

The city of Kenosha is located on Lake Michigan, about 40 miles (64 kilometers) south of Milwaukee.

What can you expect from the Republican National Convention?
Source:  WTOP
Monday, 24 August 2020 02:44

The Republican National Convention gets underway Monday, and unlike its political predecessor, it will not be entirely remote.

While most of the next four nights will be virtual, the convention begins with some Republicans physically in Charlotte, North Carolina, where it was going to originally be held.

More than 300 delegates are expected to be at the Charlotte Convention Center on Monday morning for an in-person roll call.

President Donald Trump will be formally nominated at the convention center.

That is in contrast to the virtual roll call that was done for the Democratic National Convention last week, during which Democrats announced their votes from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. territories.

RNC organizers said that health protocols were established for carrying out convention business in Charlotte. They include pre-travel coronavirus testing of all the participants, temperature checks and wearing masks.

President Trump and Vice President Mike Pence plan to be in Charlotte on Monday.

The entire convention had been set for Charlotte — but then, the president decided to move it to Jacksonville, Florida, after a disagreement over the city’s health requirements related to the pandemic.

Plans for Jacksonville were then scrapped after COVID-19 cases surged in Florida over the summer.

FAQs: What to know about the 2020 Republican National Convention

After the initial in-person convention business and roll call, the evening programming, from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m., will rely much more on a virtual presentation. But organizers say there may be some surprises.

What is not a surprise is that the president, who once hosted his own reality television show, plans to be a part of each nightly convention program in one way or another.

The president plans to give his acceptance speech on the South Lawn of the White House on Thursday.

First lady Melania Trump plans to speak Tuesday evening, and Vice President Pence plans to speak in Baltimore, Maryland, at Fort McHenry on Wednesday.

A slate of prominent Republican political leaders will also speak, though not as many as the Democrats featured. Those expected to speak include House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst and South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott.

Former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley is also expected to speak.

Convention organizers plan to feature many “average Americans,” including a couple who brandished guns at Black Lives Matter protesters outside their St. Louis home.

Also expected to speak is Nick Sandmann, a former Covington Catholic High School student from Kentucky who was involved in a viral video that received national attention near the Lincoln Memorial in 2019.

The end of the convention is expected to include a fireworks show on the National Mall on Thursday night.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A police precinct was set on fire during a protest in Portland, Oregon, prompting authorities to declare a riot and deploy tear gas to disperse the demonstrators.

The fire burned an awning at the north precinct late Sunday, news outlets reported. Police ordered demonstrators to clear the area, saying that rocks and glass bottles had been thrown at officers, as well as lasers pointed their direction. An unlawful assembly had been declared before the gathering was deemed a riot.

The tear gas was deployed after the fire had been set, according to news outlets. Protesters had marched to the precinct from a park, chanting several things including “Jacob Blake,â€ who Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers identified as the man shot by a police officer in Kenosha on Sunday. Authorities in Wisconsin had not confirmed the person’s name.

Violent demonstrations have gripped Portland for months, following the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis police custody.

Early Sunday police forced protesters away from a law enforcement building, as efforts to stop the demonstrators from gathering at the building seemingly fell apart.

The protesters apparently had plans Saturday night to march from a park to the Penumbra Kelly public safety building, news outlets reported. But, a standoff between marchers and officers took place on a bridge along the way — and the demonstrators retreated.

Protesters appear to have returned to the park, and then taken cars to the building. Police initially declared an unlawful assembly, saying items had been thrown at officers, green lasers had been pointed at officers and a support airplane and paintball guns had been fired.

The gathering was later declared a riot. Officers had been hit with rocks, bottles and other objects, police said. Numerous officers reported seeing people with some type of “press identification throwing rocks at them, authorities said.

The unrest followed rival protests Saturday afternoon. Federal authorities forced demonstrators away from a plaza near a federal building as dueling demonstrations by right-wing and left-wing protesters turned violent.
